May 4, 2002
It is Saturday, May 4th (or is it
3rd?)and I'm writing to you from the Hendrix Repair shop computer. It
is 10:30am and no, we are not on the road. Tim is not here and the RV
is not ready to be driven across the country. It's all a bit two hips
and no hooray. Pull up a barstool and I'll tell you about it!
Got to Minneapolis airport in fine
time. I must admit I was a bit concerned due to our late departure
time from Iowa City and the fact that Glenn had to stop off at
"Bargain Heaven", a roadside thrift shop along the way. Flew to
Portland with no problem. Got to the RV, settled in for a long
winter's nap since I had the journey ahead to rest up for and then
Glenn called.....
Turns out that while I was in the
air, they heard from the mechanic who said that the transmission is
screwy. The new engine is running like a dream but there is no second
gear. This means that we will not be able to leave here until Monday.
Dru (lovely Hendrix motor repair man, who I feel is now part of the
family) said that we could go ahead and drive it as far as we could,
but that he couldn't guarantee that we wouldn't get stuck at Bologna
Joe's Repair Shop in Nowhereville "waiting for parts" to fix the
thing. Obviously, waiting around in Portland is the smarter option.
Should I call Tim and cancel his
flight? I didn't need to because I received a phone call from Tim
telling me that Alaska Airlines had already cancelled his flight.
Rather than have Tim fly out later today and hold my hand in Portland
for three days, I decided to hop on the cross and tell him that there
is no need to be here, I'll be fine and to fly in Monday.
Realistically, I think I won't be able to leave here until Wednesday.
Optimistically, I won't be able to leave here til Tuesday.
Unfortunately, Tim has to be back in San Diego on Thursday. My thought
is to have Tim show up and then test him to his physical limits. In
other words, have him drive the shit out of the RV as far as he can
and then fly him out to San Diego from wherever we end up. Use him up
and spit him out!
I'm sure that things will turn out
for the better but right now, I'm fully immersed in that well known
state of being bummed the hell out. Before Glenn and Zan asked me to
go on the road with them, I had made plans to fly to Chicago for the
week of Glenn's mid-western dates...culminating in the triumphant
hometown gig of Dayton on Friday the 10th! Now, I know I definitely
won't make the Chicago gig. I'm so depressed about this, I could spit.
I wanted Glenn to meet mom (she's even making pies!!!), I wanted Glenn
to meet and hang out with Tom, my co-producer/investor in the movie...
he feels like he knows them already since he watched 65 hours of raw
footage! I wanted them to meet my friend Doug, who donated his
frequent flyer miles to me in order to fly to the mid-west in the
first place! (he's also a great pal and has been fantastically
supportive of this movie lark) And now, I'm going to miss it. Boo hoo.
I suppose Glenn and Zan will meet them all anyway, but my point is, I
WON'T BE THERE to witness the passing along of the Glenn love baton.
Don't get me wrong, this isn't a life tragedy. No one is hurt, no one
died or is in danger of getting stabbed or anything. I just think that
it is so unfair! It seems as if nothing is going our way at the moment
and it's all very pesky. Sorry to be such a drag...but I'm staying in
an RV repair shop for three more days all by myself. (note: if there
are any serial killers reading this, I am actually not staying by
myself.. I have trained pit bulls surrounding me alongside
intermittent security watches be various professional wrestlers).
Glenn tried to make me feel better by saying, "You are not Amy No
Mates...You are Amy Loads of Mates and you have loads of mates here in
Milwaukee who love you." Pity he was calling from Minneapolis. But I
knew what he was trying to say. Bless him.
The tentative plan now is this: I stay here (ain't got nowhere else to
go) until the RV is fixed. They are taking out the transmission today.
No work can be done tomorrow since it's Sunday. On Monday, the
transmission place will look at it, hopefully, make a speedy diagnosis
and then hopefully, a speedy fixing of transmission will take place on
Monday. Tim flies in Monday after midnight. Then, hopefully, we will
be on the road Tuesday first thing. Logic tells me though, that could
be wishful thinking and Tim and I are in store for a night on the town
in Portland on Tuesday and then we'll leave on Wednesday. The folks
here at Hendrix are unbelievably lovely and friendly and try to do
what they can for me. I can't tell you how much I appreciate their
help. Fred, the mechanic just came in to offer me some of his cup
o'soup. sniff sniff He feels sorry for me...how sweet! Dru even took
me out for an RV test drive today and said I passed with flying
colors! I drove an ickle bit on the tour last year, Hasta la Vista
baby.
Your lonely sister
somewhere in the Pacific Northwest,
Amyx
