Production notes from the Director, Amy Pickard

May 6, 2002

Awoke refreshed and feeling good. The weather in Chicago is beautiful and HOT! Had every intention of driving up to the Wisconsin gig in Madison but I was making phone call after phone call to try and rent a 15 seat passenger van for Glenn and Suzanne. They have friends from England flying into Chicago tomorrow and they will need a bigger van since the RV is still out of commission. I caught up (finally) with emails and phone calls and by the time I took an hour long shower, I realized I was plum tuckered and did not have it in me to drive almost 3 hours one way to see Glenn. I wanted to motivate myself to go since I learned a very important lesson from Glenn while we were making the documentary. Touring is fun, but touring is also grueling and tiring. There were times when I slept through amazing Texan landscapes and skipped out on funky places to eat since I wanted to sleep in the RV. Glenn told me that he had the opportunity once to go see Frank Sinatra play NYC back in the 70's and he didn't go since he was jet lagged and too tired. He regrets it ever since. The lesson I learned from Glenn told me that you can always catch up on your sleep but you can't make up for lost experiences.

I put his theory to the test when I got done making the documentary. I dropped Glenn and Suzanne off at the airport in San Fran, then drove 8 hours to LA, then went straight to bed. My English pal Ian was in town but only for the morning and he phoned me at 7am wanting to know if I could meet him for breakfast. I was absolutely shattered and initially said no, until Glenn's words made their way to my head. I ended up going out to breakfast with Ian, having a lovely, if not bleary eyed time with him and then I came home and napped for five hours.

I really want to go to Madison, WI to see Glenn play but I am absolutely exhausted and have a million things to do like laundry and errands. Tom, my lovely co-producer and investor called me and suggested rather than driving and driving to go see Glenn, why not leisurely drive into the city and hang with him. He'll take me to a nice dinner, we can catch up and we'll see Glenn and Zan when they arrive at our doorstep tonight after the gig. I thought that sounded darn fine so I phoned Glenn and Zan to tell them that I'm punking out on them. They understood but the fan in me is still kicking myself for missing a gig that I could've gone to. DOH! Oh well. I'll send in another update soon. I'm going to have dinner with Tom now. (oh sure I'll be eating macaroni and cheese and catching up with Tom, but I'll be secretly wondering if Glenn is playing Wicked and Cruel or Vicky Verky in Madison.) *sigh*

Hey John… trying to remember where we left off…. I can’t believe I’ve only been on the road with Glenn for two weeks! It seems like two months! I think I’ve traveled well over 4,000 miles in a small span of days. I have tour sickness…when you can’t remember what day it is, what city you’re in or even what time it is. I shall endeavor to move through this illness and fill you in on the latest. (or not so latest since I’ve been a bit slack in writing.)

Ended up skipping the Madison, WI gig and hanging out with Tom. We had a lovely dinner at a yummy Italian place near where he lives and enjoyed talking about the movie. Although I am never tired of the movie, it has been nice to put it on the back burner for the past two weeks and just focus on the fun of selling merchandise, talking to fans and of course, traveling and laughing with Glenn and Zan. A very pooped Glenn and Zan arrived at Tom’s pad around 2:30am. I toddled down the steps and waited outside to greet them both. As soon as I saw the minivan pull around the corner, I began waving my arms and jumping up and down. Glenn pulled up with a smile on his face and said, "You’re drunk!" I said, "Nope..just glad to see you guys!". As we unloaded the van, Glenn noticed that I was limping. I injured my foot in the RV incident in Portland. I like to tell people it is due to the fact that as soon as I heard Fred yelp, I ran out and lifted the RV up over my head, Incredible Hulk-style and hurt it that way. Actually, I just stepped on a stone which wedged into the really tender part of my foot and it’s bruised. Doesn’t hurt so much with shoes on but hurts a lot with only socks and sandals on.

After we unloaded, we all sat around the dining room table and had a little get to know each other chat. I gave Zan and Glenn their pressies from Portland and then told the RV/Fred story to them firsthand. Exhausted, we all went to bed around 3am, having to get up the next morning at 6:30am for a day of interviews. Ugh. It was great to see Glenn again and it was funny for Tom to finally meet them both. After seeing hours and hours of footage of them, Tom said that being with them in person was a bit like seeing a comic book character come to life. He said that it was familiar and unfamiliar at the same time. I thought it was strange to sit and talk to them with Tom in the house where we went through all the footage since Tom and I sat and watched Glenn and Zan again…only in the flesh. It’s hard to explain but it’s all good at the end of the day.
