Production notes from the Director, Amy Pickard

December 5, 2005

Well, the festive season is upon us! I know that all is seemingly quiet on the glennmovie front but let me assure you that things are barreling full steam ahead!

Check out our new ROCK CLOCK COUNTDOWN! Yes, that’s right, now you can countdown the days, minutes, and seconds until the January 24, 2006 DVD release of the film! Four years ago, we never thought this day would come but it will and you’ll be able to finally see the end in sight! Enjoy the passage of time that will bring all of us ever closer to the glorious release date when the “Glenn Tilbrook: One For The Road” DVD release will rock the world! Woo! Par-tay! Big thanks to my web guy Jacob for sorting the clock out!

YES! The DVD of GT:OFTR is still on track for worldwide release on January 24, 2006! Now, I know that most of you were hoping to have it for Xmas… but guess what? YOU CAN! Er…  sort of. For those of you living in North America, you can PRE-ORDER your DVD copy on amazon.com! Pre-ordering is actually quite important (I’m told) as retailers around the country look to the website to see the demand of titles that they order, so obviously, it would be great if all you yanks could pre-order your copy. If the DVD is pre-ordered, you can wrap up the confirmation number/order in a creative way and give it to your loved one beneath the tree or in a stocking! I have it on good authority that Santa prefers this to cookies, so see what you can do!

And, for those of you in the UK, I would highly recommend running out to your favorite retailer and joyfully slamming your sterling down for the GT:OFTR DVD on January 24, 2006 and then rushing out in February to see Glenn on his extensive solo acoustic tour of the UK where you can buy the DVD from Glenn’s merch stand! The more copies you buy, the more your friends and family will love and enjoy you!

I went to New York in November to join Glenn for a few days to promote the film. I had been led to believe that loads of film journalists would be eager to interview Glenn and myself and I looked forward to spreading the glennmovie love! I couldn’t really afford the trip, but I couldn’t afford NOT to go if it meant that some DVD’s might be sold. But, in keeping with the disastrous nature of this film, my PR person quit on the Friday before I was due to fly out! And, to top it all off, there was no press arranged! Leaving me to scramble desperately for press on the following Monday. Unfortunately, by the time I reached most of the journalists, they had informed me that it was too late to arrange anything. (Glenn was only available on the Tuesday and Wednesday!) Unfortunately, that window of time has passed and I can never get it back, so, you won’t find many American magazines covering the film because I was unable to get to them in time. Depressing, but luckily, I managed to scrape together a few syndicated radio interviews and VH1Classic interviewed Glenn and I on the air, which was a laugh but the whole trip was highly stressful for me. I will NEVER rely on anyone else to help again and I’ve been busy doing the remainder of the PR myself. But, the best thing about the whole NY press jaunt for me, was the fact that the journos LOVED the film! And, they loved the DVD’s special features - especially the Chris Difford interview! Obviously, that warmed the old cockles. Glenn and I had such fun doing press together. I think he feels a bit relieved that I’m there to shamelessly whore our websites and the film because he never remembers to plug anything and seems to ramble off topic! But, reliving some of the movie’s experiences (the good ones!) with him was a ‘right larf’ and I look forward to my trip to the UK in January for press jaunt number two. All of these trips are going straight onto the credit card since I cannot afford a TWIX at the moment, but I’m looking at all of this from a ‘deathbed perspective’. If I’m on my deathbed, what will I regret? Working for six weeks on some dumb reality TV show or will I regret not talking to the press about my first one and only film that I poured my heart and soul into for four years? I’ve seen the film through to almost the end and I can’t give up now!

So, I’m heading to England in January and in February, I shall nap. Yes, come February, I’m going to concentrate on my personal life and hang up my hat as International Squeeze ambassador for a good while. But, just because the movie will finally be out into the world, don’t think that there will be no reason to visit glennmovie.com! We have many treats in store for you! A press page will be added once reviews/features start popping up around the world. I’m going to add a page of comments from fans of the film. (Don’t really want to faff with a message board, so I thought I’d include people’s comments from their emails to me.) So please do email me with your thoughts once you get to see the film! I’ve slogged my guts out for the past four years and I definitely would love to hear what you guys think of the DVD!

Since Glenn isn’t touring round the UK in January, please satisfy your pop sweet tooth by going to see a good mate of mine Grant Langston! My best friend Tony Horkins plays drums for Grant and he has been unyielding in his support of the film. Tony wrote the text for the back of the DVD for free as well as giving buckets of advice and love throughout the past four years. He even volunteered to help shoot some of the cool RV shots while I drove past the Cruisemaster. We laughed a lot and the shots turned out rather sexy, if I do say so myself. But, you should check out Grant and his band the Supermodels in London. They are a fun bar band in the genre of Alt-Country-Americana! Bob Harris even played Grant’s CD on his show! And, you might see me swaying my lighter from the front row!

In other news: I met Sheryl Crow! I have loved Sheryl for a long time now and was backstage at an event in Los Angeles where Sheryl was appearing. I knew she would be there, so I took a DVD of the film to give her. I gave her the DVD, she was unbelievably lovely and she shared that she loves Glenn and Squeeze and that she can’t wait to see the film. I told her that I dedicated the film to a handful of musicians who inspired me (including her) and she asked why I included her and I stammered, “Because I love me some Sheryl!” I’m an idiot. But, she was very tolerant and patient with me. She asked me what the film was about and what’s happening with it and after telling her that it was coming out worldwide on DVD, she looked at me and said, ‘You should be so proud of yourself Amy, that’s a huge accomplishment.’ When she said that, IT WAS AS IF SHE SAW INTO MY SOUL! It was hilarious. At that moment, I thought that she understood what I went through to with this movie and not many people ‘get it’. I couldn’t believe that one of my musical heroes was telling me what a good job I did, and I found myself strangely touched and slightly tearful so I excused myself quickly before I broke down and she called security. Later, I ran into her in the hallway and she actually made a point of thanking me again and telling me how she couldn’t wait to see the flick. Of course, I fantasize that she skipped home to Lance and cuddled up together on the couch to watch the DVD! Then, of course, she would love it so much that she would decide to email me and then we would become best friends and shop for jeans together on Melrose and then I can go and live for free in her mansion while she’s on tour. Seriously though, Sheryl is very warm, sweet and cool. She was like a bad ass rock and roll mom. She just puts you at ease and I’m in awe of her talent. I hope she enjoys the film and then decides that she wants to duet with Glenn!

Since we’re talking about my dorky fandom, some of you may want to check out the DVD of Francis Ford Coppola’s film “The Outsiders”. I was obsessed with this film when I was a teen and so I wrote FFC a letter when I was 15 asking him to please include scenes left on the cutting room floor since I thought it would make a better film! (Hmm… I was showing signs of a director even then!) Needless to say, I never heard back from him. Until a few months ago! I received an email asking if I was Amy Pickard from Dayton, Ohio who wrote a letter to Francis Ford Coppola when I was 15! I didn’t remember writing a letter but it sounded like something I would do, so I called the number on the email and asked what the heck was going on! Anne, who works for FFC’s company, was ecstatic to hear from me and said that they have been trying to reach me for months! I couldn’t get over the shock of FFC having KEPT my letter for over 20 years! Anne wanted my permission to let them use my letter in a documentary that they were making for the Outsiders DVD release. The point they were making was that many people wrote asking for the deleted scenes to be included in the film and all these years later, FFC is including those scenes in the film. Hence, the director’s cut of the film being available on DVD. I gave them my permission and sure enough, in the documentary in the special features, you can see my koala bear stationery on the woman’s lap (the top of the stack!) as she talks about the letters from fans. And, then you see a slow motion close-up of my letter. For those that know me, my perfect handwriting is instantly identifiable, but sadly, you don’t see my name on the letter. (I signed it Amy Elizabeth Pickard age 15!!!) It’s such a crazy thing that they kept my letter and that they used it in a documentary 22 years after I wrote it. But, check it out if you can. I think the director’s cut makes it a much better film and it’s satisfying to know that I gave FFC the right advice when I was 15!

Are there any MySpace experts out there? I want to set up a page for the film. I have no clue how to do it but would like it done before the release of the film so more people can check it out. I don’t have time to sort it all out myself since I’m doing all of the PR myself, so I’m looking for volunteers to help with a GT:OFTR MySpace page!

I want everyone to have a lovely and safe holiday and I can’t wait for you to see the DVD! I had 100% complete creative control over it and am bursting with pride over the whole thing. We’re nearly there!! Many thanks and all the best!

 Love,
Amyx
