Production notes from the Director, Amy Pickard

April 25, 2002

Writing from Denver, Colorado from the What Are Records office. It's been difficult getting online with all the traveling that I've done but I'm finally hooked up! Are you seated comfortably? Do you have a refreshing beverage nearby? Here's the latest:

The RV is STILL being repaired. It was sicker than we thought, so while the lovely gentleman at Hendrix Motor Repair in Portland are looking after the once mighty Cruisemaster and making it mighty again, Suzanne and I drove a rented minivan 1200 miles to Denver in order to meet the man on crutches. The drive was grueling but fun. We had to load the van up with all the bags from the RV and so we look like a family of ten traveling around even though we are only two rock chicks. I keep telling Glenn and Suzanne that every time we pull up somewhere, it's like the Clampetts on Holiday! Sadly, the van had no CD player so we were forced to listen to what local radio had to offer. Basically, any decent radio station has little or no reception and the stations that come in loud and clear are inevitably christian stations (not that there's anything wrong with that) and country. Having to choose between the two, we opted for country and now know every Martina McBride song by heart.

I've been driving through loads of 'square states' that I've never been to before...Utah (beautiful, stunning mountains and wildlife), Idaho (very dark and couldn't see much) and Wyoming (uh....let's just say that it was a bit like being on another planet....no civilization anywhere practically. But we did see a prairie dog! Ah, the simple things that cheer you up on a relentless, boring drive.) Arrived in Denver, exhausted, unwashed and greeted at the hotel by an equally exhausted pop star as he was giving good 'phone'....he was doing lots of phone interviews while we unpacked and foxed up for the gig. Went onto the gig at the Bluebird Theatre which was fab. I have been sitting in the parking lot of an RV repair shop in Portland for the last two days, as well as driving FOREVER and now I finally get to experience the Glenn-in-concert-love! He played a tauntingly brief snippet of my fave song, You See Me at the soundcheck but then went onto something else. DOH! The tshirts for the tour arrived (better late than never) and we all ooohed and aaaahed as we took them out of the box. I had to put one on immediately and got many groovy compliments..they look fantastic!

I got to meet all the What Are Records peeps and they are a lovely bunch. So lovely in fact, that they took Suzanne and I out for a meal at a local Ethiopian restaurant. I'm usually a macaroni and cheese white trash kind of girl, but I thought some horizon expanding was in order and I went along for the fun. The company was fantastic and the food was....interesting. As our Dad would say, I ate Ethiopian twice last night. (for the FIRST and LAST time!) The gig was fantastic in spite of wanting to nap on the floor of the bar. I forgot to write down a set list.. thought maybe that might be interesting to send you from city to city...but promise to take better notes next time. Glenn didn't let the crutches stop him from the rocking though, as he proceeded to take the entire crowd across the street to a sports bar for a rousing sing along to Goodbye Girl and "California Dreaming". (Glenn hobbled as a fan played guitar.) The crowd were loving every minute of it! It was fun to go along with everyone and
[I think Amy got attacked by a wandering grizzly at this point, then, having vanquished her fuzzy frothing foe, valiantly continued. - jp]

We are in Boulder, CO tonight...and I heard that Randy Newman is playing tomorrow in town. Hmmmm.... will Randy and Glenn's paths cross? and if so, will there be another song written about the bonding? (or lack thereof?) Stay tuned.. same Glenn time, same Glenn channel. We are onto Omaha, Nebraska tomorrow. Don't know when I'll be online again but hopefully will talk to you soon.

By the way, I just read this back and it is mind numbingly boring...I have had little sleep and have gone from a car to a hotel to a gig to a hotel to a car, etc.... Hoping to have a few more Glennlicious tales to tell since we have now joined him 'officially' on the road.

Rock on,
Amyx
